All the routine operations of the editing room are discussed, from the receipt and documentation of material, preparation of rushes, synchronization, and dealing with day-to-day problems such as film damage, through to the first assembly and preparation of post-synchronized sound. Later stages are described as they occur in production: production of various special effects, sound dubbing and building effects tracks, cutting the master negative, and preparing final prints for distribution. A chapter is devoted to the preparation, recording, and use of music in the film, and the special requirements for widescreen, censored, or foreign versions. The book is addressed to a professional audience producing feature-length films, but many of its techniques will be of use to amateur filmmakers.
