The functions of the editor and his or her assistants in the production of a large-scale film are described in detail. All the routine operations of the editing room are discussed, from the receipt and documentation of material, preparation of rushes, synchronization, and dealing with day-to-day problems such as film damage, through to the first assembly and preparation of post-synchronized sound. Later stages are described as they occur in production: production of various special effects, sound dubbing and building effects tracks, cutting the master negative, and preparing final prints for distribution. A chapter is devoted to the preparation, recording, and use of music in the film, and the special requirements for widescreen, censored, or foreign versions. The book is addressed to a professional audience producing feature-length films, but many of its techniques will be of use to amateur filmmakers.
