- Dedicated to the memory of Earnest Elmo Calkins, dean of modern advertising, one of its all-time creative giants and elder statesman of the Art Directors Club of New York, who died this October at the age of ninety-six, and who dedicated much of his lifetime to the welding of creative art with good advertising.
In 1908 Earnest Elmo Calkins asked, "Why not an exhibition of advertising art?" And thus it began. In 1960, on being honored by our Club, he noted the great progress advertising and design had made over forty years and wondered aloud where advertising would go from there. We hope that this annual reflects even greater progress and points the way to the future.
