Whether they're in Great Britain, Belgium, Finland, Italy, Russia, Kazakhstan, or China: cities are shrinking everywhere. While urban debates of recent years have mainly focused on the growth of the megalopolis, parallel to this, there are zones that are shrinking. These are marked by population losses running into the millions and high unemployment. Globalization and the transition to post-Socialism have accelerated this process, which, in western industrialized nations, had begun earlier with suburban flight.nBeginning with concrete examples, the causes and dynamics of the shrinking process are examined for the first time on an international level.
