Rough Guide to Classical Music - rough guide

KORTE INHOUD

How can anyone cover all of classical music and opera in just 465 pages, including an index? It can't be done with too much depth, but the Rough Guide team led by Jonathan Buckley has done its best, managing to achieve a reasonable amount of breadth. Of necessity, the entries are brief and the number of recordings examined extremely limited; some of these recommendations do seem odd. It's a wonder how any guide of this sort could fail to mention the Solti/Decca version of Wagner's Ring, or the classic Sir Neville Marriner-Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra reading of Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances; here, it is the exclusions that jump out. But the guide's inclusions are quite often on the mark. There is a slightly British bent to the discs, artists, and composers listed, but that should not be a problem for most listeners. As always, it's a good idea to consult more than one guidebook before investing heavily in a recorded music library.
