'Scheibler's manual restricts itself more or less to painted pottery. It is in three parts of about equal length - on uses, manufacture and trade. (...) S. has been diligent in her reading, as references show, but the result is more a compilation than a critical scrutiny and some of her views are doctrinaire, though usually dissenters are mentioned in the notes. (...) S.'s style of writing is lucid, sometimes sedulously conversational and occasionally witty, and she has chosen her illustrations well. This is a useful, though not outstanding book: beginners should get a good, if slightly prejudiced grounding and the more expert be grateful for the references.' (R.M.
