Seneca Lucan Corneille. Studien zur Manierismus der römischen Kaiserzeit und der französischen Klassik. - WANKE, Christiane,
KORTE INHOUD
?This monograph is a successful although necessarily partial answer to Curtius? question: ?Wie lebt das griechisch-römische Altertum in den Literaturen des moderne Europa fort?? Using a method that is almost as selective as the periods she has chosen for study, Dr. Wanke has cited striking parallels between Seneca?s ?Medea? and Corneille?s ?Médée?, Lucan?s epic (?) and Corneille?s ?Pompée?. On a more general level, she has found equally impressive similarities between Silver Age rhetoric and French Neo-classicism. (?) On the whole this well-documented study is a welcome relief from the usual attempts to find ?influences? often where none exist. Dr. Wanke is more interested in parallelisms than influences, and as a result has produced an excellent work that should do much to validate the methods of Comparative Literature.? (BERNARD F. DICK in The Classical World, 1964, p.23).
