Selected Private Speeches. Edited by C. Carey and R.A. Reid. - Demosthenes

KORTE INHOUD

'A well-edited selection of Demosthes' private speeches is to be welcomed. (...) In keeping with modern trends the editors concentrate on the subject-k=matter of the speeches rather than on the language or the artistic qualities. There is an excellent introduction which, apart from giving a short account of Demosthenes as a writer of private speeches, describes the Athenian legal system as contrastec with our own, the part played by the speech-writer, and his relationship to his client. (...) there is no critical apparatus, but the more important points are discussed in the commentary. (...) A preface to the commentary on each speech gives the general and legal background to the case. Stress is laid throughout on assessing the speaker's motives, the validity of his arguments, and their likely effect on the jurors. (...) This is a scholarly work edited with good sense and discrimination. It should be of value to a wide range of readers.' (H.LL. HUDSON-WILLIAMS in The Classical Review (New Series), 1986, p.313)...
