Sebastiano Del Piombo - VAHLAND, KIA

A Venetian in Rome

KORTE INHOUD

During his lifetime, Sebastiano del Piombo (about 1485 to 1547) was considered the great hope of Venetian painting, alongside Giorgione, and he later became Raphael's biggest competitor in Rome. He was the only Renaissance artist to mediate between the Venetian and the Central Italian School. Developing the ideas of Giorgione, Leonardo, and Michelangelo, he turned them into a discerning, colorful, and classical style.nnThe imaginative Venetian was the first to discover a technique that enabled him to paint with oils on stone. He and his friend Michelangelo fell out over this, as the latter thought this technique was something just for "women and lazybones like Sebastiano." This is why, in his Lives of the Artists, Giorgio Vasari declared that Sebastiano was lazy, which resulted in centuries of disrespect for del Piombo's work. A rediscovery of the unique portraitist is long overdue, and this publication will contribute to this. (German edition ISBN 978-3-7757-2144-8)
