?This hard cover will be useful, for I feel certain that this monograph will be frequently used by everyone interested in Euripides? ?Bacchae?. (?) Rijksbaron?s new book is almost a juxtalinear commentary providing linguistic and text critical observations on about 25% of the verses of the ?Bacchae?. As indicated in the Preface (p.VII) he discusses in principle: (1) passages where the existing comments vary; (2) passages where one particular commentary seems wrong, and (3) passages not commented upon previously. Several times he also extends these criteria (?) and provides broader literary comments, (?). For many verses rijksbaron was able to correct the existing interpretations and to provide a more adequate translation. (?) The author has provided four useful appendices. (?) Very useful too are the extensive and carefully made indices (pp.197-217): an 'index locorum' (?), an 'index graecus' (?), and an' index rerum'. (?)
