This original exhibition will examine the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu and his inner circle, and the use this great statesman made of the visual arts of his era to promote his political and cultural vision of a new and unified France. It will focus on the grandiose period between 1620 and 1642-1643 and present over two hundred works - paintings, sculpture, prints and drawing, architectural plans, maquettes and decorative art objects - by such famous artists as Philippe de Champaigne, Charles Le Brun, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin and Simon Vouet. Divided into six sections, this presentation will explore public and state commissions, religious commissions, intellectual and scholarly patronage, Richelieu and his circle as private patrons, the life of the people and the subsequent myth of Richelieu. The exhibition is organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne.
