?Smaragdus belongs, along with Alcuin and Remigius, to that select group of Carolingian grammarians who are often mentioned but little read. But whereas in the case of the other two the scholarly community has little excuse for this behaviour - for, however inconvenient or downright inadequate existing editions may, they do at least exist - as far as Smaragdus ic concerned, the absence of any complete edition has acted up until now both as a deterrent and as the justification for this neglect. He has suffered more than most grammarians from the pernicious nineteenth-century practice of publishing extracts, a practice which tells us more about the excerpters than about Smaragdus. The publication of this edition makes available the first complete text of the grammar. The edition is based on unpublished material by Adele Kibre, one of Charles Beeson?s pupils at Chicago, who completed her dissertation in 1930.
