'This book seeks to demonstrate the importance of geography in Orosius' historical work and to examine his geographical ideas (...). He begins with the premise that Orosius is a geographer of Late Antiquity, not of the Middle Ages. The work falls into two parts: the first (pp.17-133) provides a French translation of 1.2 and deals with the cartographic interpretation of Orosius' description of the world; the second (pp.135-260) is devoted to comment and concentrates on Orosius' description of the world, his ancient geography and the evolution of the information he presents. (...) This is a thoughtful and detailed study of Orosius' geographical ideas. While a whole book devoted to this topic might seem excessive, it is still welcome, for geography, like chronology, is basic to the study of history; publications on ancient geography are comparatively few at this time, and it is pleasing to see one from a country with such a long tradition in such studies.
