Ventriloquism is currently enjoyed as an amusing facet of the performing arts but, long before it became entertainment, it was part of a mystic divinatory practice employed by the ancients to evoke the spirits of the dead.
Mentioned in the Bible several times, it was condemned by the Church and, during the Dark Ages, many exponents were put to death. When the practice emerged as an entertainment it was still misunderstood. Some believed it to be a special talent that enabled certain individuals to 'throw the voice'.
During this period, voice throwing was the main feature of the ventriloquial entertainers, makin their voices come from everywhere but themselves. Their 'familiars', although heard, were only seen through the imagination of the audience.
In the nineteenth century, a new dimension was added to the art when the ventriloquist began to accompany himself with a ventriloquial figure, originally called an automaton or speaking doll. The relationship between the ventriloquist and his doll has provided a weal...
