Malignancies of the liver, bile ducts, gall bladder , and pancreas are among the most dismal of neoplasms. Early diagnosis, at a time when curative treatment can be employed, is rare. In fact, untilrecently, tissue diagnosis of more advanced cases has been difficult. Any biliary or pancreatic surgeon with experirience is occasionally frustrated by the inability to obtain a tissue diagnosis even when a mass in the pancreas, or a biliary stricture, is exposed. Similarly, the surgical techniques required for attempted cure or palliation are difficult, and the results discouraging. Even within the last decade, several centers have advocated that only palliation should be the goal of treatment in patients with these tumors.....
