?The author indicates in the preface that he proposes neither a ?Handbuch? nor the pursuit of an original, idiosyncratic idea or eccentric schema, but a simple presentation of the data and currents of literary history. A brief introductory chapter presents various basic ideas and concepts that provide a needed orientation for those not familiar with medieval Latin, and concludes with a schema of periodisation (?). The first book is divided along geographical lines. (?)
