In the decades surrounding World War II an energetic new avant-garde art developed in New York. The manner later described as Abstract Expressionism became the most important American contribution to modern art, and established New York as its center. The artists shared common principles of spontaneity and subjectivity, largely derived from French Surrealism. Abstract expressionism had an extensive and lasting impact on printmaking. The full range of its styles and ideas appear in prints.
