Contemporary Aboriginal Art - Leslie Smith

KORTE INHOUD

Contemporary Aboriginal Art as an art movement is barely 50 years old. At the time of the rediscovery in the early 70's, the culture of the Australian Aboriginals was almost extinct Two centuries of occupation of their lands by white settlers had resulted in the death of most of Australia's indigenious people by violence, diseases and changing lifestyle. During the 60's and 70's a growing social conscience and emancipation awakened.
Encouraged by art teachers some Aboriginal artists started painting on canvas, a new way of visual representation of millenia old cultural traditions and a revival of Aboriginal art.
This book demostrates the contemporary art work of 24 Aboriginal artists.
