At the time of the rediscovery in the early 70's, the culture of the Australian Aboriginals was almost extinct Two centuries of occupation of their lands by white settlers had resulted in the death of most of Australia's indigenious people by violence, diseases and changing lifestyle. During the 60's and 70's a growing social conscience and emancipation awakened.
