Aristophanes and his Theatre of the Absurd. - CARTLEDGE, P.,

KORTE INHOUD

'In the Preface the author poses 4 questions: is it feasible to look for any serious message underlying comic drama; if so, is the standpoint anti-democratic or just sceptical towards authority; does the Artistophanic hero represent the ordinary Athenian of about 400 B.C.; does Aristophanic fantasy necessarily carry any practical implications? In answering these questions the author endeavours to provide enough material on Athenian society to make the plays' contexts intelligible. (...) The author does provide interesting solutions to the problems poses and offers some stimulating interpretations of the plays.' (CHARLES MACLACHLAN in The Classical Review (New Series), 1991, pp.468-69). From the library of the late Prof. W. Geoffrey Arnott.
