?As Ampler points out in his lengthy and exhaustive commentary, the handful of studies of APh have proposed widely conflicting opinions about its origins. (?) Although adhering in general outline to Peterson?s views about the encatrite origins of APh, A.?s provisional reconstruction of the work?s textual history makes different assumptions about the work?s origins and composition. He proposes that the APh was a collection of several different sources, mainly originating in encatrite circles in Asia Minor. (?) In A.?s views, the ordering of the disparate parts of APh is inverse to the chronological order in which they were composed. (?) The interest in this excellent edition and commentary will not be confined to specialists on ?Acts of Philip?. Students of Christian asceticism and ancient Phrygian religions will find much of interest in the appendixes accompanying the commentary.
