?The appearance of this edition of the ?Supplices? is welcome for at least three reasons; first because it is the first full-scale edition of the play in English, and in almost any language, since that of Thucker in 1889; secondly because at a time when the revised dating has radically altered our estimate of the play it is all the more important to have an adequate foundation for its study; and thirdly, but not least, because it is such a good edition. (?) the Introduction to this edition deals with the text of the play, and much of it is devoted to a systematic consideration of the working methods of the reviser of N. The clarity and thoroughness with which the editor expounds these would by themselves make his work valuable. (?) The apparatus is a model of what such things should be. It is long, not because it is filled with improbable conjectures (?), but because it records in full the readings of E as well as M, and because it presents with unusual fullness and clarity the corrections of the reviser. (?)...
