Hutongs are known as streets, and alleys in other cities in China, and they form the skeleton of old Beijing. Their history can be traced back to the Yuan Dynasty, (1271-1368) when the Mongols built Dadu (the Great Capital), which later became Beijing.
In 1215, Mongol troops led by Genghis Khan attacked the Jin Tartars and burned down their palace in Zhongdu or Yanjing (the Central Capital of Jin) in what is now Beijing.
