Teone di Smirne - Theon of Smyrna

Expositio rerum mathematicarum ad legendum Platonem utilium : introduzione, traduzione, commento

KORTE INHOUD

'This book offers a new edition of a treatise on mathematics by Theon of Smyran, a second-century AD Middle Platonist. The ?Expositio? is Theon?s only surviving work. It is presented here as offering an illuminating insight into the characteristic Middle Platonist approach to mathematics in this period. Petrucci shows that the work is a technical exegesis of Plato?s ?Timaeus? (though this is presented as consistent with other Platonic works, including the ?Republic? and ?Epinomis?). He also underlines the role of ?problems? or ?points of enquiry? (zetema) I exposition which recur in Theon and in other Middle Platonist works. Theon, as Petrucci presents his aims, ?reargues? the ?Timaeus? with a view to showing that this work embodies a complete and authoritative understanding of the structure of the cosmos. The book contains a new text of the ?Exposition? (96 pages), which constitutes a substantial revision of the 1878 Teubner. This is preceded by a substantial introduction and note on the text and translation...
