?This important and enormously thorough investigation of the nature and purpose of Euripides? prologues is based on updated versions of articles and studies written at different times, with some consequent repetition. (?) Every page of this study deserves attention. E. argues his case with firm but kindly and discreet authority and bases it on a lifelong study of Euripides and a genuine sensitivity to dramatic form and the needs of the theatre. His basic understanding of Euripides? concept of tragedy is to my mind very much on the right lines. The full, if not entirely complete, bibliography illustrates his wide knowledge of the field, the indices are competent and the misprints in splendidly presented book are negligible.
