This volume discusses the origins of Roman satire, with particular reference to Ennius' fragmentary satires; the work of the four major satirists - Lucilius, Horace, Persius, and Juvenal; and Menippean satire as exemplified by Varro, Seneca , and Petronius. The task of describing the various satirists and their work was devided as much as possible according to the interests and competencies of the three authors, who also did the translations which appear from time to time in their chapters.
