Recherches sur le Symbolisme Funéraire des Romains. - CUMONT, Fr.,
KORTE INHOUD
'No one could review this great work without a deep sense of gratitude and of loss. Cumont died in August, 1947, busy to the last with these studies (...). He kept to the end his robust faith in scholarship and in goodness. The title of this book indicated its thesis - that the themes of Roman grave-altars and sarcophagi and of the paintings in funerary hypogaea are not simply (...). In large part at least they involve for C. specific allegorical meanings, crystallized above all in Neopythagorean thought and known to us largely from Plutarch, Arisitdes Quintillianus, and Neoplatonists.' A bald 'summary gives no idea of the richness of the treatment, the abundant and apt illustrations, the delicate human sympathy, the skilful arrangement. (...) We are once more in his debt for the knowledge and for the feeling with which he has explored the religious sentiment of antiquity.' (ARTHUR DARBY NOCK in The Journal of Roman Studies, 1948, pp.155-56). From the library of the late Professor Doktor Nikolaus Himmelmann.
