?This is a stimulating book written with more serenity than has been usual over the last twenty years in connection with the subject indicated by the first word of the title: virginity. (?) There is no doubt that we must admit from the start that the book is full of ideas, texts and facts. (?) The first basic theme in this book is that of the ?angelic life?. (?) The second basic idea is borrowed from my book ?The Love of Learning and the Desire for God? [by J. Leclercq - ND] where I attempted to characterise the intellectual attitude of mediaeval monks by saying that it ?might be better described by reviving the word ?gnosis?. (?) The close connection between angels and gnosticism, both (?). taken to be historical, results in a conception of virginity - sometimes confused with chastity - which becomes predominant and obsessive. (?) I suggest that we need to restore to the subject its entire complexity by recalling certain necessary distinctions. (?) Stress must be laid on the true signification of the angeli...
