Plays of sophokles - Leinieks

KORTE INHOUD

'After a short introduction, L. devotes a chapter to each of the seven surviving plays: 'chapters on such general topics as Greek religion, Sophokles' philosophy, or the concept of the tragic hero have been purposely avoided' (p.3). L. concentrates on character analysis, quoting extensively in english with important Greek words transliterated. He believes that 'the mores successful an interpretation is, the less original it will be', and thus supports his own views with quotation of the views of others. (...) The scholars most frequently quoted are Bowra, Kitto, and Knox. (...) as it is he is often dogmatic, and readers will need more than appeals to authority if they are to be convinced.' (M. LLOYD in The Classical Review (New Series), 1984, p.127).
