Horaz und die augusteische Kultur. - WILI, W.,
KORTE INHOUD
'Wili has the great merit, commoner in German-speaking countries than else-where, of regarding literary history as a real subject. It is refreshing to find words like 'Synkretismus' bandied about; Roman poetry makes no sense unless one is ready to talk about sources, and Horace's antecedents are unusually complex. (...) He points out admirably how the 'Epodes' contaminate elements from the minor Greek genres. (...) Wili is good on witchcraft, less so on politics (...). He is good on the social background of Roman love-poetry (...). He makes some good observations on friendship and meditation. (...) Wili is better on the 'Epistles' than on the 'Odes'. (...) The 'Epistles' allude to the epistolary form without in any sense being real letters; Willi deserves great credit for understanding this point, which is not always fully appreciated.' (R.G.M. NISBET in The Classical Review, 1968, pp.55-57).
