?This collection consists of nine papers on the ancient novel and its ?Nachleben? from the 1986 colloquia at Groningen. (?) In many respects this little volume concerns itself with ambiguity: all touch on reader reaction in some way, many on reaction to that most tantalizing of texts, the ?Metamorphoses?. While little emerges that is new, there is much responsible reformulation and incentive to further discussion. (?) The collection is attractively produces, and often conspicuously well documented.
