'The book sets out to determine certain literary characteristics of the 'Aeneid', and then, tracing the persistence of these in two selected later epics (the 'Gerusalemme Liberata' and 'Paradise Lost'), to identify a irgilian species of the genus Epic. (...) The body of the book contains a study of Virgil's poetic technique in the 'Aeneid', under three headings: (1) Organization of the material; (2) Verse and Syntax; (3) Use of Epithets. A student of Virgil, even if he is indifferent or racalcitrant to this or that of the conclusions drawn, will find much to interest him in these sections, and in the section on epithets in particular the lists and statistics are helpful and informative; the principal groups of epithets here considered are those relating to colour, magnitude, and individual persons.
