Du Latin au Français. - MAROUZEAU, J.,

KORTE INHOUD

?The title of this work recalls the very thorough ?From Latin to Modern French? by Mildred K. Pope (2nd ed.,1952) and also from ?Latin to Italian? by Charles H. Grandgent. The purpose of this slender volume is, however, entirely different. It was prepared by the distinguished professeur honoraire of the Sorbonne for the publications of the ?société d?Études latines?, of which he is general editor. It belongs to the ?Série pédagogique?, not the ?Séries scientifique?. According to the ?Avant-propos?, it is an attempt to indicate the facts of Latin which will help to explain the French language, and it is intended for students who will not study Latin - or rather it is intended for their teachers. (?) In general, the book will serve its purpose well. It should widen the horizon of the French-speaking student who is so unfortunate as to be deprived of systematic study of the Latin language.? (ALBERT W. THOMPSON in Revue belge de philologie et d?histoire, 1959, pp.437-39).
