Byzantine Philanthropy and Social Welfare. - CONSTANTELOS, D.J.,

KORTE INHOUD

?Father Constantelos examines in detail the operation, or, at all events, the profession, of christian charity during the eleven centuries of Byzantine imperial history. He has read very widely, and brought together a body of material which gives much additional information ?philanthropy? as practised by the imperial families, the Church and monastic establishments, and private donors who were not by any means always rich themselves (c. p.101). His bibliography (pp.290-315) leaves little to be desired. The whole constitutes an indispensable ?Hilfshandbuch? for the study of a most important aspect of Byzantine social life.? (R. JENKINS in Speculum, 1970, p. 122).
