'In this interesting little book a picture of Strabo is presented ( solely, be it noted, on the basis of Books III & IV of the 'Geography') as a writer of considerably more originality than the uncritical excerptor of earlier works (...) which he is customarily considered to be by most modern scholars. According to Thollard, the key notion that underlies Strabo's work is the contrast between a less developed stage of human culture ('la barbarie') and a much more highly devoloped one ('la civilisation') brought about largely by the Romanisation of the ancient world.
