Ammianus Marcellinus as a Military Historian. - CRUMP, G.A.,

KORTE INHOUD

'It has without doubt been a very good idea of Mr. Crump's to study the military aspect of Ammianus Marcellinus' 'Res Gestae', which has generally been neglected despite its obvious importance for the personality of the historian and the central theme of his work. He has also thrown light on the problem of the military structures in the historian's epoch, using Ammianus as a source. (...) This book (...) represents a valuable contribution to Ammianean studies. The evidence adduced by Mr. Crump is well selcted and carefully examined, though it would have been, perhpas, more deisrable if he had produced more evidence to support his very stimulating theories.'
